Analysis Of F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby
War changes many things. It changes people, families, towns, and societies. War changes the world and it changes people s attitudes. One common trend seen after major wars is a time of economic prosperity, when the economy is booming and all is well. This was seen after both World Wars, in the 1920ââ¬â¢s and the 1950ââ¬â¢s. In each decade, everyone was returning from the war, spirits high, and looking to celebrate. The economy prospered, and all was well. One major change that came about from these wars and was seen in these eras was the attitudes that people felt for one another. In the literature of the two time periods, these attitudes are very accurately depicted. The first piece of literature is F Scott Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s The Great Gatsby, a 1920ââ¬â¢s set novel that shows the way that people treated others. The second, The Death of a Salesman, the 1950ââ¬â¢s set play, produced by Arthur Miller. Each of these pieces give insight to the way that people wer e treated and some of the negative consequences that can result from this. The third and final source, From Motor City to Motor Metropolis, by Thomas Sugrue, talks about how automobile producers treated their customers and how devious their tactics were. The common theme in all these sources is that human life is disposable in post-war decades. Why Homosexual Mariages Should Be Banned A battle has been in progress for years over whether equal rights and equal protection against discrimination should be extended to homosexuals. Recently this has expanded into the area of marriage. The topic of homosexual marriages is a prevalent issue today. Even in the nation's capital, representatives are finding ways to make this alliance unlawful. This topic has been debated bringing up many valid points, but the fact of the matter is that homosexual marriages are wrong and we, as a country, should not condone such acts. Marriage is the institution whereby men and women are joined in a special kind of social and legal dependence for the purpose of founding and maintaining a family. Although some same sex marriages may be capable of coping financially, the negative influence on children raised in their household has been statistically proven. Not only would same sex families deal with negative connotations in terms of their children, but also most religions in North America frow n upon the union of same sex relationships and restrict marriage to one man and one woman. Many critics hold opposing views, arguing that same sex marriages harm no one and that to deny them the right to marry is unconstitutional. First and foremost, we as a society must think of our future when an issue such as homosexuality comes in to play. In no way can one change someone's sexual orientation, but it is proven that homosexuality in the household can be detrimental to a child's upbringing. . According to Debra Busher, an expert on child psychology, Sexual orientation of a parent is critical to the upbringing of a child. Society is based on the ideal of having heterosexual parents, and it goes against values for same sex parents to raise children. Having homosexual parents is also a major stressor for a child due to society's norms and values- it can cause embarrassment and abnormal feelings. Children who are raised in alternative family lifestyles', are more likely to engage in drugs and have negative feelings towards their parents and themselves, than children raised by normal families. To allow an act such as homosexual marriages to continue, it displays that we have blatant disrespect for our children's future. To ensure that the United States remains successful, and remains the prominent leader of the world, we must first take care of our children. Banning homosexual marriages can do this; it will lessen the amount of improper behavior our children see and imitate. Many people believe God created man and woman with the intentions to bear children. In addition, they stress the absence of homosexuality in the Bible. Critics of homosexual marriages regard homosexuality as an abnormal behavior according to the Christian faith, which is the dominant religion in the United States. Homosexuality has been seen as an unacceptable lifestyle and those who practice it are prone to receive criticism if not outright hostility. Most respectable ministers would refuse to marry two people of the same sex, limiting the couple to being married in commercial areas by materialistic preachers. This choice forces many same sex couples to forego legal marriage and recognize their union themselves. Homosexuals pursue their lifestyle and marriage at the risk of being ostracized from the religious community. Although many profess that homosexual marriages harm no one, this statement is completely false. As stated earlier, homosexual marriages have numerous detrimental effects on children raised in their household. Not only do the aforementioned influences apply, but also children raised in such an environment would have a higher possibility of choosing that type of lifestyle. Their parents are seen as being normal and looked up to as role models, guaranteeing their lifestyle being accepted by their children. Statistics show that 45% of gay males, and 20% of lesbians experience physical or verbal assault while in high school, and 28% of these teenagers feel forced to drop out of school because of harassment about their sexual orientation. These theories assessments have been formed as to explain the development of the human personality. With the help of personality assessment instruments that have been designed, it helps to establish solid research as well as the validity of each personality theory. Assessments of personality are conducted through several means: questionnaires, observations, and projective tests. The science of management has had many studies prepared on the topic, however, now studies have been underway on leadership roles. The Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI(r)) can determine if certain personalities are better equipped to serve in a project leadership roll because of certain core set of traits or competencies (Gehring, 2007). MBTI tool sorts for preferences and does not take into account trait, ability, or character. MBTI is different from other psychological instruments and along with that different from other personality test (The Meyers Briggs Foundation, n. d. ). Assessment Inventory The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI(r)) measures an individuals choices for certain tasks. This theory was based off of psychologist Carl Jungs work on archetypes. His theory stated there are differences of temperament guide behavior on four dimensions. Myers-Briggs Type Indicators purpose is helping people understand psychological types. The core of this theory is that random behavior in people is actually very orderly and consistent, this is because of the critical differences people use their judgment and insight. Characteristics over the four dimensions are: Favorite World does the persons attention on the outer world or inner world? This is called Extraversion (E) or Introversion (I). Information does the person take in basic information or do they interpret it and more to it? This is called Sensing (S) or Intuition (N). Decisions does the person make decisions at first look on logic and consistency or at people and circumstances? This is called Thinking (T) or Feeling (F). Structure does the person dealing with the world outside like to get decisions made or like to keep an open mind that new information or special circumstances might appear? This is called Judging (J) or Perceiving (P) (The Meyers Briggs Foundation, n.d. ). The uses of MBTI in an engineering or project manager type of field can help determine what fields of engineering is most suitable for a person. MBTI has shown different work environments attract a certain type of engineer. MBTI has also shown when given to those specific people that those engineers that score high on Feeling and Perceiving are predisposed to leave consulting engineering earlier then those that scored high as a Thinker and Judger. Feeling and Perceiving personalities will join academia, public agencies, regulatory agencies, or research organizations. MBTI has shown individuals Feelings and Extraversion preferences in the engineering field within two years transfer to other fields outside engineering curricula (Culp Smith, 2009). By being able to administer MBTI can cut down on high turn over rates in a work place. It cost time and money to run ads for employment, job training, and paperwork. The purpose of choosing MBTI is individuals are geared differently at perceiving information and how they use the information they receive (Chae et. , al. ,2003). With keeping this in mind it takes certain type of personalities to work in the field of engineering and/or being a project manager. Assessing this information gives a better understanding of the person from whom you will be or might be hiring. Analyze Selected Assessment with Personality Theories Carl Rogers was a significant America psychologist and one of the originators of the concern for people method to psychology. Rogers used a nondirective method of helping the individual. He did not ask questions, he just listened to what the individual had to say. He accepted the individual for who he or she was (Kirschenbaum, 2004). Even though MBTI is a questionnaire there is no administrator asking the questions. Only an administrator who scores the questionnaire; the individual is accepted no matter the final scoring of the questionnaire. Carl Rogers approach and the MBTI both help individuals see who they are and possible areas of improvement. Research Findings The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI(r)) assessment is a science of psychological measurement questionnaire designed to measure preferences in how individuals perceive and make decisions. Myers and Briggs preferences were infer from Carl Gustav Jungs typological theories published in his 1921 book called Psychological Types (The Meyers Briggs Foundation, n. d. ). Myers and Briggs started constructing the indicator during World War II. It was Myers and Briggs belief, knowledge of personality preferences would help woman entering the industrial workforce for the first time. This assessment would indicate what type of job(s) women would feel most comfortable and successful in. This questionnaire grew into what is now known as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The MBTI concentrates on standard populations and accentuates the significance of naturally taking place distinctions (The Meyers Briggs Foundation, n. d. ). This assessment performs greatly since it can be taken by any individual from any background and come up with a career field more in tune with the individuals personality style. It executes completely in terms of the personality assessment of target population. In regards to target population the MBTI it used frequently in areas of career counseling, team building, group dynamics, professional development, leadership training, engineering, and project management. Everyone abides by some sort of world view, though another human being may not be cognizant of it. These preconceptions often have emotional impact on the thinking of every human being in the world daily. Possessing a Christian world view provides a starting point of morality and solidity that most non-Christian world views do not possess. From a Christian standpoint, it is believed that everyone was created in the image of God. For the reason that we are believed to have been created in His image, there are morals that should be upheld. To the same degree my studying of business, I feel that I would need to be a symbol of patience and benevolence. It understandably goes along with that of the way a human being thinks affects what is done by that human being. Working in a business setting where a friendly and courteous demeanor is expected can present a challenge when dealing with individuals who go against every belief you abide by. In a business setting a person can easily lose their cool whether on the phone speaking to a wayward customer or just dealing with an unmanageable employee. Being a Christian, it is known that God would not want this being he has is a patient spirit and I too should be patient and kind. In Galatians fifth chapter twenty second through twenty third verse states, ââ¬Å"But the spirit produces the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.â⬠The scripture gives you an idea about each of us. If we have a godly spirit within ourselves then we should bare those same fruits of the spirit in times of distress. Our creation in the image of God does not mean we are perfect in any sense of the word. It only means that we will at some point in our lives fail God, regardless of how hard we try not to because we are human beings. I as a business woman should show patience with my customers and employees even when they refuse to comply with theà rules and show them and myself that I have a heart similar to God. Colossians chapter one verse eleven reveals that ââ¬Å"God will strengthen yo u with his own great power so that you will not give up when troubles come, but you will be patient.â⬠The scripture brings a sense of peace and lets it be known never to lose hope. For instance, if an employee is consistently misusing the telephone for personal use I should stand firm. Possibly I could pull the employee aside and reaffirm the rules of the job as it pertains to the telephone. Psalms chapter forty one verse one conveys, ââ¬Å"How blessed is he who considers the helpless; The Lord will deliver him in a day of trouble.â⬠The scripture indicates that sheer kindness or benevolence will actually be rewarded or shown favor to the person if a day comes where they need the same kindness shown to them. Within a business setting benevolence is a major part of the day to day tasks. Whether or not you are in a bad mood, upset about something, or just not feeling up to it, you must show kindness. In the second book of Corinthians chapter four verse four, a phrase referencing Jesus who is the ââ¬Å"image of God.â⬠Nobody truly understands the meaning of the phrase but it can make a sweeping statement. Being throughout the bible God is referenced as a spirit to be in the image of God has to refer to his character and attributes that are replicated in human beings. From the bible you can take that the image of God reflects empathy, reasonableness, adoration, loathing, cooperativeness, patience, kindness, and so much more. All of which are exhibited by God but also characteristics of human beings. An example, if I notice that a guest is coming up short on a bill and I have the authority or the means to help, I would just let them know not to worry about it and that I would take care of it. Having a Christian world view in a business setting can be very hard. It can become even more strenuous when you look at the entire world as a whole. Trying to keep a Christian mindset in all aspects of the business world can wear thin on your patience. Although, knowing that in time your patience will be compensated is something more meaningful than allowing someone or something to take you out of your element. By showing who you are and not wearing a mask each place you step foot in will be satisfying within itself. Showing kindness to those you come into co ntact with can also shed light on a person. In the business setting such as mine it is gratifying knowing that through the Christian faith patience and benevolenceà is seen to be a portion of God. The image of God can be shown in many ways within a business setting it is up to the beliefs of the Christian how they will be revealed.

It is when we are called on to stand up for what we believe is right, while going against the grain. Organizational culture refers to a system of shared meaning held by members that distinguishes the organization from other organizations. Seven primary characteristics seem to capture the essence of an organizationââ¬â¢s culture 1.Innovation and risk taking The degree to which employees are encouraged to be innovative and take risks. 2.Attention to detail The degree to which employees are expected to exhibit precision, analysis and attention to detail. 3.Outcome orientation The degree to which management focuses on results or outcomes rather than on the techniques and processes used to achieve them. 4.People orientation The degree to which management decisions take into consideration the effect of outcomes on people within the organization. 5.Team orientation The degree to which work activities are organized around teams rather than individuals. 6.Aggressiveness The degree to which people are aggressive and competitive rather than easygoing. 7.Stability The degree to which organizational activities emphasize maintaining the status quo in contrast to growth. Creating and Sustaining Culture An organizationââ¬â¢s current customs, traditions, and general way of doing things are largely due to what it has done before and how successful it was in doing it. This leads us to the ultimate source of an organizationââ¬â¢s culture: its founders. Free of previous customs or ideologies, founders have a vision of what the organization should be, and the firmââ¬â¢s small size makes it easy to impose that vision on all members. Culture creation occurs in three ways. First, founders hire and keep only employees who think and feel the same way they do. Second, they indoctrinate and socialize these employees to their way of thinking and feeling. And finally, the foundersââ¬â¢ own behavior encourages employees to identify with them and internalize their beliefs, values, and assumptions. When the organization succeeds, the foundersââ¬â¢ personality becomes embedded in the culture. Keeping a Culture Alive Once a culture is in place, practices within the organization maintain it by giving employees a set of similar experiences. The selection process, performance evaluation criteria, training and development activities, and promotion procedures ensure those hired fit in with the culture, reward those who support it, and penalize those who challenge it. Three forces play a particularly important part in sustaining a culture: selection practices, the actions of top management, and socialization methods. 1.Selection The explicit goal of the selection process is to identify and hire individuals with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully. The final decision, because itââ¬â¢s significantly influenced by the decision makerââ¬â¢s judgment of how well the candidates will fit into the organization, identifies people whose values are essentially consistent with at least a good portion of the organizations. 2.Top Management The actions of top management also have a major impact on the organizationââ¬â¢s culture. Through words and behavior, senior executives establish norms that filter through the organization about, for instance, whether risk taking is desirable, how much freedom managers give employees, what is appropriate dress, and what actions earn pay raises, promotions, and other rewards. 3.Socialization No matter how good a job the organization does in recruiting and selection, new employeeââ¬â¢s need help adapting to the prevailing culture. That help is socialization. For example, all Marines must go through boot camp, where they prove their commitment and learn the ââ¬Å"Marine way.â⬠New recruits go to an internal Web portal to learn about the company and engage in some activities that help them understand the culture of the organization. After they start work, they continue to learn about the organization through an ongoing social networking application that links new workers with more established members of the firm and helps ensure that culture is transmitted over time. Why is culture important? Culture can affect business outcomes in a number of ways, both positive and negative. For example, cultures that are not aligned with corporate strategy can lead to decreased loyalty, a lack of motivation, and high employee turnover. Healthy cultures, however, impart pride and a sense of purpose to employees, leading to increased productivity and a greater understanding of corporate goals, as with the employee at the car manufacturing plant. Strategy, operational performance, and culture are all strongly related. High-performing companies often view culture as an enabler of strategy and performance, and want to create a culture that will support and enable employees in achieving those goals. Define and Establish Cultural Diversity A typical organization has an extensive range of people who have cultural and personal differences. A small business interested in fostering cultural diversity among its employees endeavors to create mutual respect for the different cultures, along with enabling personnel to reach their full potential. Acknowledging diverse cultures enables the organization to positively influence the organizational behavior that, in turn, enhances the performance and image of the organization. The business should portray the cultural diversity aspect of the organization in the mission statement. The Positive Influence of Cultural Diversity in Organizational Behavior Cultural diversity involves the differences in the composition of members of an organization in terms of nationality, race, color, gender, creed, religion or age, in other words, an array of culture found among people from diverse backgrounds. Organizational behavior refers to the nature of interactions among people and groups within an organization. The positive influence of cultural diversity facilitates members of the organization to build relationships and acknowledge each other regardless of their differences of origin and background. Transforming Organizational Behavior The patterns of behavior in the organization are influenced by the nature of interactions and degree of diversity within the organization. The business,à therefore, should seek to create an organizational culture that not only enhances the diversity of its workforce composition but also boosts individual performance. The positive influences of cultural diversity not only enable the organization to increase the scope of its reach the business also receives favorable exposure from every sector of the population due to its multicultural approach. Honesty â⬠the Best Policy Essay
Honesty is the human quality of communicating and acting truthful and with fairness, as best one is able. It is related to truth as a value. This includes listening, reasoning and any action in the human repertoire ââ¬â as well as speaking. Superficially, honesty means simply, stating facts and views as best one truly believes them to be. It includes both honesty to others, and to oneself (see: self-deception) and about ones own motives and inner reality. Western views on honestyà Since the quality of honesty applies to all behaviors, one cannot refuse to consider factual information, for example, in an unbiased manner and still claim that oneââ¬â¢s knowledge, belief or position is an attempt to be truthful. Such a belief is clearly a product of oneââ¬â¢s desires and simply has nothing to do with the human ability to know. Basing oneââ¬â¢s positions on what one wants ââ¬â rather than unbiased evidence gathering ââ¬â is dishonest even when good intentions can be cited ââ¬â after all even Hitler could cite good intentions and intended glory for a select group of people. Clearly then, an unbiased approach to the truth is a requirement of honesty. Because intentions are closely related to fairness and certainly affect the degree of honesty/dishonesty, there is a wide spread confusion about honestyââ¬âand a general belief that being dishonest means that one alwaysà correctly understands if their behavior is either honest or dishonest. Self-perception of our morality is non-static and volatile. Itââ¬â¢s often at the moment we refuse to consider other perspectives that there is a clear indication we are not pursuing the truth, rather than simply and exclusively at the moment we can muster up evidence that we are right. Socrates had much to say about truth, honesty and morality, and explained that if people really understood that their behavior was wrong ââ¬â then they simply wouldnââ¬â¢t do it ââ¬â by definition. Unfortunately, honesty in the western tradition has been marginalized to specific instances ââ¬â perhaps because a thorough understanding of honesty collides with ideologies of all types. Ideologies and idealism often exaggerate and suppress evidence in order to support their perspectives ââ¬â at the expense of the truth. This process erodes the ractice and understanding of honesty. To an ideologist the truth quite often becomes insignificant, what matters most are their ideals and what ever supports their desires to enjoy and spread those ideals. Human beings are inherently biased about what they believe to be good due to individual tastes & backgrounds, but once one understands that a decidedly biased approach to what is true ââ¬â is inherently dishonest, one can also understand how idealism and ideology have poorly served the quest for an honest, moral society. Both honesty and morality require that we base our opinions about what is good ââ¬â upon unbiased ideas of what is TRUE ââ¬â rather than vice versa (determining what is true based on what we feel is good) ââ¬â the way all ideologies would have us believe. The studies of Confucius about honesty Confucius recognized several levels of honesty, fundamental to his ethics: His shallowest concept of honesty was implied in his notion of Li: all actions committed by a person to build the ideal society ââ¬â aiming at meeting their surface desires of a person either immediately (bad) or longer term (good). To admit that one sought immediate gratification could however make a bad act better, and to hide oneââ¬â¢s long term goals could cloud a good act. A key principle was that a ââ¬Å"gentlemanâ⬠must strive to convey his feelings honestly on his face, so that these could help each other coordinate for long term gain for all. So there was a visible relation between time horizon, etiquette and oneââ¬â¢s image of oneself even in the mirror. This generates self-honesty and keeps such activities as business calm, unsurprising, and aboveboard. In this conception, one is honest because it suits oneââ¬â¢s own self-interest only. Deeper than Li was Yi or righteousness. Rather than pursuing your own interests you should do what is right and moral ââ¬â based on reciprocity. Here too time is central, but as a time span: since your parents spent your first three years raising you, you spent three mourning them after they die. At this level one is honest about oneââ¬â¢s obligations and duty. Even with no one else to keep you honest or to relate to directly, a deeply honest person ould relate to ancestors as if they were alive and would not act in ways that would make them ashamed. This was part of the moral code that included ancestor worship, but Confucius had made it rigorous. The deepest level of honesty was Ren, out of which flowed Yi and thus Li. Confuciusââ¬â¢ morality was based upon empathy and understanding others, which required understanding oneââ¬â¢s own moral core first, rather than on divinely ordained rules, which could simply be obeyed. The Confucian version of the Golden Rule was to treat your inferiors as you would want your superiors to treat you. Virtue under Confucius is based upon harmony with others and a recognition of the honest reality that eventually (say in old age) one will come under the power of others (say oneââ¬â¢s children). So this level of honesty is to actually put oneself in context of oneââ¬â¢s whole life and future generations ââ¬â and choose to do or say nothing that would not reflect oneââ¬â¢s familyââ¬â¢s honour and reputation for honesty and acceptance of truth, such as eventual death. Partially because of incomplete understanding of these deeper notions of honesty among Westerners, in Asian countries it is common to refer to those who do not have them as barbarians. While sometimes Asian cultures sanction an almost intolerable degree of delay and ambiguity for Western tastes, it is very often to avoid lying, or giving a positive impression where doubt exists. These would be thought dishonest by Asians. Thus pressing for a decision on a matter where it is not yet possible to give an honest commitment or answer is seen as extremely rude ââ¬â in effect, forcing someone to choose to be either rude or dishonest. Both being unthinkable in traditional culture, one thus delays. A Buddhist teaching on honesty Thanissaro Bhikkhu taught: ââ¬Å"Real honesty is being honest about what your possibilities are, what your potentials are. Thats where true honesty lies. It stretches us. Itââ¬â¢s not simply admitting where we are ââ¬â thatââ¬â¢s a beginning step, itââ¬â¢s not the end step. So be honest about where you are but also be honest about what your possibilities are. That keeps the challenge of the path always before us. ââ¬

Childcare workers should therefore be sensitive to the needs of children who are fussy eaters or small eaters and ensure that these children are offered a good variety of food that they will accept. They should eat foods from each of the four main food groups every day. Vitamin C is important in maintaining good health and may have a role in helping the body to absorb iron if both nutrients are present in the same meal. When planning menus in a childcare setting you must consider children who have special needs. Some children may have particular dietary requirements or may need specific help with eating. Sarah Slack Food unsuitable for young children and babies There are many different foods which are unsuitable for young children and babies, such as: Salt Salt can be dangerous for babies as it can damage their kidneys. Salt should never be added to babies food. Stock cubes or gravy are high in salt so they should be avoided when making homemade food for babies. Pre-packaged food can contain high amounts of salt so the packaging should always be checked to ensure the salt intake isnââ¬â¢t too high. The table below shows the guidelines provided by the Food Standards Agency for salt consumption: Sugar Sugar is the leading cause of tooth decay in young children. Milk teeth which start to ââ¬Ëcome throughââ¬â¢ when a child reaches the age of around 6 months are very susceptible to acid erosion from sugars. Research suggests that children are more sugar sensitive than adults, and the effects are more pronounced in younger children, according to Dr. Keith Conners, author of Feeding the Brain. This could be related to the fact that the brain grows rapidly in the preschool years, exaggerating the effects of sugar on behavior and learning. Honey Honey can contain a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum which can produce toxins in a babyââ¬â¢s intestines, leading to infant botulism, which is a very serious illness. The symptoms include: Constipation The child not wanting to feed or eat Suffering from lethargy These symptoms can take several months to appear after the spores have been consumed as the spores grow in the infantââ¬â¢s gastro-intestinal tract and as they grow the toxins are released into the blood stream. Once an infant reaches the age of one the intestines begin to develop ââ¬Ëgoodââ¬â¢ bacteria which are able to fight off the bacteria. Nuts Whole nuts, including peanuts, should never be given to children under five as they can choke on them. As long as theres no history of food allergies or other allergies in a family a baby can be given peanuts once theyre six months old as long as they are crushed or ground into peanut butter. 1% of the population are affected by a peanut allergy and children that have a sibling which is affected have a greater risk of being affected themselves. Low fat foods Fat is an important source of calories and some vitamins for babies and young children. Until the age of two years children should be given whole fat milk, cheese, oily fish, yogurt and fromage frais. After the age of two the amount of fat in a childââ¬â¢s diet can gradually be decreased. Eggs Eggs should never be given to babies under 6 months old. Babies have a delicate intestinal system and they can react to the protein found in eggs. They can be given to babies over six months old, but they must be cooked until both the white and yolk are solid to prevent salmonella which can be very dangerous for young children. Saturated fat A child should never be given too many foods that are high in saturated fat such as crisps, chips, cheap burgers and cakes. Raw shellfish Raw shellfish can increase the risk of food poisoning so itââ¬â¢s should never be given to young babies and young children. They can contain salmonella bacteria which causes food poisoning. Swordfish, shark and marlin The amount of mercury in these fish can affect a babyââ¬â¢s growing nervous system so they should never be given to babies and children. Regular consumption above the recommended limits of fish containing high amounts of mercury can lead to a toxic build up and it can have a devastating effect on the central nervous system of babies and children, causing impairments with movements and cognitive brain function by displacement of essential neurons. Some chronic childhood diseases that can effect development are: Diabetes Asthma Cerebral palsy Cystic Fibrosis Diabetes Diabetes is a condition that prevents the body from properly using energy from food. It affects around 3.2 Million people in the UK. It occurs when the pancreas does not produce insulin, or when the pancreas produces insulin, but it is resisted by the body. It is a lifelong condition that causes a persons blood sugar level to become too high. There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. In type 1 diabetes, the bodys immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin. As no insulin is produced, glucose levels increase, which canseriously damage the bodys organs. Type 1 diabetes is often knownas insulin-dependent diabetes. Its also sometimesknown asjuvenile diabetes because it usually develops before during theteenage years. If you are diagnosed withtype 1 diabetes, you will needinsulin injections for the rest of your life. Type 2 diabetes is where the body doesnt produce enough insulin, or the bodys cells dont react to insulin. This is known asinsulin resistance. Type 2 diabetes is more common than type 1 diabetes. If youre diagnosed withtype 2 diabetes, you may be able to control your symptoms by simply eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly,and monitoring your blood glucose levels. Type 2 diabetes is often associated with obesity. Obesity related diabetes is more common in older people. Diabetes can have various complications that can hamper development in children. These include diabetic retinopathy and diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. Its caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It can impair a childââ¬â¢s vision which can have a knock-on effect with their development, both physically and intellectually. Diabetic neuropathy can affect nerves in many different parts of the body. The most common early symptoms of the condition are numbness, tingling, or sharp pains in the feet or lower legs. Because nerve damage can happen anywhere in the body, problems can occur in almost any organ system, including the digestive tract, urinary system, eyes, and heart. Asthma Asthma is a common long-term condition that can cause coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and breathlessness. Asthma typically appears in childhood and around 1 in 10 children are affected. Asthma symptoms can get gradually or suddenly worse. This is known as an asthma attack. During an attack the airways become inflammed and narrow which constricts the childââ¬â¢s breathing. Some allergies such as pet hair and pollen cause trigger an attack. Asthma can hamper emotional and intellectual development depending on the severity of the disease. If a child has to miss time off school due to frequent asthma attacks this could cause the child to fall behind on school work and also important socialising. The attacks may also be frightening for the child which can affect them emotionally. This could lead to anxiety and stress which in turn could impact on a childââ¬â¢s life when growing up. Cerebral Palsy Cerebral palsy is caused by a problem in the parts of the brain responsible for controlling muscles. The conditioncan occur if the brain develops abnormally or is damaged before, during or shortly after birth. Causes of cerebral palsy include: An infection caught by the mother during pregnancy Bleeding in the babyââ¬â¢s brain Changes in the genes that affect the brains development A difficult or premature birth Many can children suffer visually and may have hearing impairment. It may also affect learning and delay growth. A child with cerebral palsy may be slower in achieving important developmental goals, such as learning to crawl, walk or speak. Cystic fibrosis Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disorder affecting the exocrine glands. It causes the production of abnormally thick mucus, leading to the blockage of the pancreatic ducts, intestines, and bronchi and often resulting in respiratory infection. It can lead to inadequate growth due to poor digestion which is a result of malnutrition. Symptoms usually begin in early childhood and include persistent cough, wheeze, repeated chest infections, malabsorption of food and general ill health. Treatments include antibiotics, physiotherapy, and mucus thinning medicines, pancreatic enzyme replacements and other therapies. It is a life threatening condition. School Choice: Long Over-due à This paper reports on my position on school choice, what I believe is the ideal school choice program and the steps that must be taken to successfully implement school choice. First and foremost, the idea of school choice is not a new concept. Those who could afford it always have had school choice. Now as a potential option for more parents, choice will be constricted by the amount of money and the type of resources (transportation, political influence, etc.) one has. à I approve of the idea of school choice that empowers parents to select their children's school. However, as choice is now proposed this empowerment will not happen for all parents. Those with the least amount of money and resources will have the fewest choices. In cases where lower income parents lack transportation to the school of their choice, the nearest school will most likely be their only option. Also, where will the additional money come from when lower class parents do not have enough to pay for the school of their choice? à According to economist Lester Thurow (1996), the middle class was created by the government's investment in education, i.e., GI Bill. School choice seems like the government's way of sharing the wealth with the middle class in addition to providng more schools to choose from. This effort appears to be an attempt at widening the ever-closing gap between the middle class and the lower class (a.k.a. working poor). School vouchers or educational opportunity grants may even entice parents who send their children to private schools to send their children to public charter schools thereby reducing what they now spend on tuition. à Although school choice does not guarantee a quality education or the employability of graduating students, I believe that school choice will offer competition and have a positive influence on operational efficiency. Based upon conditions in some inner-city public schools (crumbling infrastructure, lack of access to technology, few and/or outdated books, etc.), there will probably be even less students in traditional public schools thereby having a positive effect on reducing the classroom size. This effort appears to be an attempt at widening the ever-closing gap between the middle class and the lower class (a.k.a. working poor). School vouchers or educational opportunity grants may even entice parents who send their children to private schools to send their children to public charter schools thereby reducing what they now spend on tuition. à Although school choice does not guarantee a quality education or the employability of graduating students, I believe that school choice will offer competition and have a positive influence on operational efficiency. Based upon conditions in some inner-city public schools (crumbling infrastructure, lack of access to technology, few and/or outdated books, etc.), there will probably be even less students in traditional public schools thereby having a positive effect on reducing the classroom size. This could make teaching in a traditional public school more manageable. à In the readings an argument made for school choice was that children who might otherwise fall through the cracks will be given the chance at an education best suited to meet their needs.

Why Australians Should Welcome Refugees
Why Australians should welcome refugees The Australian Government and the people of our communities must allow more refugees into our country. They have no choice but to leave their countries and unlike us they can't Just get on a plane to another country. So why won't we help them? Refugees are often treated badly by Australians but why? Refugees offer a lot to the community, they are hardworking and respectful and they will also do Jobs a lot of Australians will not, it Just sickens me to think that people think they shouldn't be allowed Into Australia.Firstly Australia needs to let many more refugees Into the entry. Compared to other countries Like the UK and the USA, Australia lets hardly any refugees in and we have so much room. How would you feel If you were living In a corrupt, third world country dominated by call wars and terrorism and, finally, after saving up for your whole life could afford to get a ticket on a rickety boat with no guarantee of survival to a country that you have heard so many great things about, where you have rights and freedom and when you arrived you were put In a detention center?This is what happens to them, they get put in there for years and some of them never even get out. Detention centers are like prisons and we need to get rid of mandatory detention centers, a lot of refugees kill themselves in there because their family is gone and they are left there not sure of whether they are going to get out. In some cases it is finally the day when you are let free and you have all these great expectations but you experience racism and you are looked down upon by the people around you. Is that fair? Secondly it's not their choice as to whether they flee their country or stay living there.The reasons they have to move often include; there may be civil wars there, their human rights aren't being expected, they are under threat of prosecution because of their religious beliefs or their life is under threat. You think they Just get on a boat to come to Australia with no guarantee of survival because they feel like moving? Some Australians say that they should stay and fight in their own country. This is absolutely ridiculous, if you lived in a corrupt, war torn third world country would you stay and fight for your country being proud of where you live?Finally, in many cases when they arrive in Australia after spending weeks to months on a crowded unsafe boat often being attacked by pirates and then to be sent to a detention center for years before being let out and being looked down upon by the people of your community and being thought of as inferior to them for many reasons. How would that feel? On top of what they have gone through many Australians have the audacity to make racist comments towards them. Refugees offer many things to the community. Refugees are almost always hard working, and appreciative because of where they came from.They are almost always better employees than many Australians because they try much reader and don't take things for granted. Many refugees will also do many Jobs that a lot of Australians believe they are ââ¬Å"too good forâ⬠. Many people say refugees are taking all the jobs off of the Australians however the reality Is that they take any opportunity they get to work and will often do Jobs with less pay, plus they are generally better workers so as an employer why wouldn't you employ a refugee as long as they had think that that we shouldn't let refugees in. The good that they bring outweighs the bad by a long way.They have to travel all the way over here for months only to be put onto a detention center. It's not their choice that they have to leave their countries and it disgusts me that some ignorant, inconsiderate people actually think that refugees should stay and fight in their own countries, but in reality they have tried. If they stay in their own countries they may die! Why would anyone want to stay and live in a place like that? Many Aust ralians even stoop low enough to make racist comments and remarks, after all they have been through. Maybe we need to be more educated as to what they have been through and reconsider what they think.

Methods of Evangelism Essay
The Intellectual Method of Evangelism referred to as ââ¬Å"The Four Spiritual Lawsâ⬠is best known as the widely used way of evangelism used by the popular college ministry known as Campus Crusade and was first published in 1957 by founder, Bill Bright in a pamphlet titled Have You heard of the four Spiritual Laws? In this publication, Bright simplifies the truths of the Gospel in an attempt to reach as many people as possible. What are known as Biblical truths are delivered as spiritual laws in order to assist people to recognize that just as we are governed by manââ¬â¢s laws on earth, there are also spiritual laws that govern the relationship between God and man. The four spiritual laws are: 1) God loves you; 2) Man is sinful and separated from God; 3) Jesus Christ is Godââ¬â¢s only provision for manââ¬â¢s sin and 4) We must individually receive Jesus as Savior and Lord. (Bright, 2007) There are some very obvious advantages in using this method of evangelism. It is s imple and easy to follow and it starts off on a very positive note by explaining Godââ¬â¢s love for mankind rather than addressing the sinful state that all of mankind is in before accepting Christ. Each point also has Scripture references to emphasis or proves that the laws are from God himself. The Four Spiritual Laws has been wildly successful in winning souls for Christ and the publication itself has sold over one hundred million copies and has been translated into all the major languages of the world making it a readily available resource for an evangelism tool. (Moo, 2002) There are however several disadvantages in choosing to use this method of evangelism. By electing to start these laws out on a positive note and addressing Godââ¬â¢s love for mankind first instead of the sinfulness and our need of a Savior, one may get the false impression that he does not need to be saved. In addition with the references to scripture being taken out of context of could easily misunderstand the true meaning. One such example would be the first law, ââ¬Å"God loves youâ⬠and the referenced Scripture John 3:16 and John 10:10. While God does love everyone, these Scriptures taken out of context fail to show that it is Godââ¬â¢s nature and one of Hisà attributes to love us. And the recipient of the word may not understand that a loving God will still judge people for their worldly sins. The main concern with the Four Spiritual Laws is that although this pamphlet although Biblically correct mentions that a person can receive Christ through prayer. Prayer alone is not how you receive Christ. Prayer combined with Faith is what it takes to have a true conversion. (Robert H. Servant Evangelism The Relational Method of Evangelism referred to as Servant Evangelism is based on the ideal that Christians are to reach others by love, compassion and service while embracing a kind heart and a generous attitude along with a loving smile. The motivation that fuels servant evangelism is Jesus, himself especially when he was speaking to His disciples from the scriptures in Matthew Chapter 25 where he tell them that they are to feed the hungry, cloth and shelter the homeless, take care of the sick and visit those in prison as if they were serving Jesus. Servant evangelism is more about ââ¬Ëdoingââ¬â¢ the message of the Gospel than speaking it and drawing people to Christ through those actions. (Tarjanyi, 2013) There are some strong advantages to this sort of evangelism as the perception that non-Christians may have of Christianity may be altered and they may be more willing to remember a more positive image rather than negative one. The focus shifts to the selfless acts of compas sion and service they see these Christians performing in the name of Jesus. Many non-believers that witness Christians performing acts of service are very willing to acknowledge that there must be some other power that drives the Christian to do so. This opening can lead as an avenue to lead a person to Christ. On the other hand, by meeting the physical needs of a lost person and not addressing what may be causing those needs (which could easily be a sinful nature), one may run a risk of never reaching that individual for Christ. This is a definite disadvantage of servant evangelism. At all times, the servant must remain focused just like Jesus did and always turn the needs towards God and draw those in need to the real answer to all their needs. It can become very easy to get consumed with meeting needs and lose focus of the true mission which is to lead people a step closer to God. Evangelism Explosion Evangelism Explosion is a method of evangelism in which the leaders indicate that their principles are drawn directly from the Bible. This method is highly organized and is designed around the focal point ââ¬Å"training those won to the Lord to win, and train, othersâ⬠. (Davis, 2010) the technique utilizes a series of direct confrontational questions which emphasize a key point of the Gospel and the non-Christian is challenged to respond. Questions like, ââ¬Å"Do you know for sure you are going to be with God in Heavenâ⬠or ââ¬Å"If God asked you , ââ¬ËWhy should God let you into Heaven?ââ¬â¢ what would you sayâ⬠are posed and the goal is to get the non-believer to open their mind and heart up to the Gospel message. There is a two-fold advantage to this approach of evangelism. First, this type of evangelism can place a direct challenge on the Christian to become more active in their own community and this aspect of evangelism makes Christians become very good at communicating the Gospel message effectively. The second advantage is that this approach directly confronts the non-believer with their sinful state and refuses to allow them any way to escape the salvation message. The non-Christian cannot dismiss Jesus as their moral teacher. They are left to decide if they will accept Him as Savior. The disadvantages of this confrontational method are also two-fold. Some may say that these sorts of trainings can become too rehearsed and sound memorized and scripted instead of from the heart. This may turn a non-Christian off to hearing the Gospel. The other issue is that the high pressure nature of the question and answer session may produce false converts. The process of going through a premeditated dialogue can leave much open to be criticized by many. Application of These Methods to Your Own Life The method of evangelism that works best for me is Servant Evangelism. Although I do see that there may be several responsibilities that are also attached to this approach, this is the best way that I have been able to be the actual hands and feet of Jesus to a lost and hurting world that may otherwise not be open to hearing the Gospel message. After reading and researching many of the other techniques, I find that servanthood best suits me. As we read in 1 Corinthians Chapter 12, God gifts us each uniquely. I feel that the service is a gift. Not everyone can serve with a gratefulà heart. Servant Evangelism is how the Lord reached me and I am sure that impact is part of the reason I have such a deep connection to this technique. Matthew 25 has been adopted as my familyââ¬â¢s scripture verse and is the basis of our family mission statement. I was once a ââ¬Ëleast of theseââ¬â¢ and I will never forget how the Lord reached down and saved me. Telling people about what God is doing in my life is the greatest joy I have ever found. For the people God has placed in my life, servant evangelism is the perfect way to ââ¬Ëshowââ¬â¢ them the Gospel message. I am an active member of an international prison ministry. Time and time again, I have heard the participants on our retreats say that ââ¬Å"people just donââ¬â¢t do these thingsâ⬠. I also get the privilege of serving special needs children and adults as well as traveling with a ministry that visits churches that are in conflict or struggling and every time the people see the people of God come together to serve, not out of our own power but from Godââ¬â¢s power.
